Bible Belt, always anti-gambling when it comes to sportbetting. Miami had a shot in the 70's to become the Las Vegas of east when the big hotels like the Deauville and Fountainbleu were in decline. It would have worked too. One dazzling casino after another on Collins Avenue. Unlike Las Vegas Miami had it all because you would have the beaches and casino nightlife. The Atlantic City toilet would have failed if Miami had gone through with it. The Evangelicals went on the warpath and that was the end of possible legalized state sanctioned gambling in Miami Beach. The Seminole casinos years ago before the Hard Rock took them over were nothing more than dumps like the El Cortez and old Western Casino on Fremont Street. They shot down the casino amendment in 1978 before Atlantic City opened up Resorts. It was soundly defeated with almost 72% voting no. I can't even imagine what Miami could have become.
